"AG Merrick Garland Allocates $78 Million to Combat Violent Crime in Chicago and Two Other Cities"

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced the expansion of the Justice Department's Violent Crime Initiative (VCI) to St. Louis, Missouri; Jackson, Mississippi; and Hartford, Connecticut, aiming to combat violent crime by surging law enforcement resources and tools to target gangs and violent groups. The initiative has contributed to reductions in violent crime and homicides in cities like Houston and Memphis, and the Justice Department is committed to replicating these successes in additional cities.

At least 48 districts have been hit by ransomware attacks this year, with data stolen in all but 10 cases. The summit aimed to raise awareness and provide federal resources to combat the issue, including tailored security assessments, grants, and support from technology providers. However, experts noted that limited federal funds currently exist to address the problem, and school districts have been ill-equipped to defend against these attacks. The lasting impact of these attacks goes beyond financial costs, with the exposure of private records causing trauma for staff, students, and parents.

There is no timetable for declaring the slope stable enough for residents to return. The White House has approved a request for Orange County to be included in the federal emergency declaration resulting from recent storms, which will free up federal resources for people affected by the landslide.
