EU Development Aid to Palestine Cleared of Terrorism Financing

The European Commission has announced that it will continue with payments of development aid to the Palestinian territories after an internal review found no evidence of funds being diverted to terrorist groups. The review was launched in response to concerns about the potential funding of Hamas, a designated terrorist organization. While no links to terrorism were found, two EU-funded projects worth €8 million have been suspended due to allegations of funds being used to incite hatred. The Commission is considering additional controls, including monitoring social media posts, to prevent hate speech and violence. The EU is the largest donor of aid to Palestinians and will continue to provide critical assistance.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged to provide development support to Poland to help it assist Ukraine in defending itself against Russia's invasion. Kishida said Japan would offer Poland assistance to support its role and is looking to "vigorously build up" projects. Japan usually provides the type of promised aid to developing countries, which Poland is no longer, but the Japanese government is making a special exception. Kishida said it was crucial for like-minded countries such as Japan and Poland to remain united in their support for Ukraine and in furthering sanctions against Russia.
