Toyota Unveils Versatile Compact Engines for Multi-Fuel Use

Toyota, along with Subaru and Mazda, is developing new compact 1.5L and 2.0L internal combustion engines that are adaptable to various carbon-neutral fuels like e-fuel, biofuels, and liquid hydrogen. These engines are designed to be smaller, lighter, and more efficient, aiming to meet stricter emissions standards and integrate seamlessly with electric drive units. This initiative reflects Toyota's strategy to maintain a diverse range of powertrain options, including hybrids, as the automotive industry moves towards tougher emission norms and carbon neutrality.

"Toyota, Mazda, Subaru Collaborate on Next-Gen Combustion Engines"

Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru are collaborating to develop new internal combustion engines that will be compatible with carbon-neutral fuels like liquid hydrogen, biofuel, and synthetic fuel. Each company will focus on their signature engine types: Toyota on inline-fours, Mazda on rotary engines, and Subaru on horizontally opposed boxers. The new engines aim to improve efficiency and performance while allowing for more aerodynamic and design flexibility in future models. Despite the collaboration, the companies will remain competitive with each other.

"Mercedes-Benz Shifts Away from Full Electric Commitment Due to Weak Demand"

Mercedes-Benz is delaying its plans to go all-electric by 2030 and will continue to produce vehicles with combustion engines into the next decade. The company's initial goal of having half of its vehicles electrified by 2025 has been pushed back to 2030, reflecting the slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles. CEO Ola Kaellenius emphasized the brand's commitment to combustion engines, citing updates that will extend their lineup into the 2030s. This shift aligns with a broader trend in the automotive industry, as companies like Ford and General Motors also adjust their electrification plans in response to weakening demand for EVs in the U.S. and Europe.

BMW Boosts EV Investments and Closes in on Target Amid Growing Demand

BMW is increasing its investment in electrification faster than planned and is on track to achieve its target of 15% battery-electric vehicle sales this year. However, CEO Oliver Zipse stated that it is too soon to set an end date for combustion engine car production, as sales in major growth markets like China and the U.S. remain strong. BMW reported a 2.9% drop in net profit for the second quarter but saw higher revenues and sales. The company also highlighted supply chain and inflationary issues, while forecasting growth in the European and U.S. auto markets.

EU to phase out sales of gas-powered cars by 2035.

The European Union has approved a new law that bans the sale of CO2-emitting vehicles by 2035, with the exception of vehicles that run on "climate-neutral e-fuels". Germany pushed for the exemption for combustion engines, arguing that e-fuels are not widely available and are expensive and energy-intensive. The law will also require that by 2030 only new vehicles with 55% lower CO2 emissions will be sold. Roughly 25% of the EU’s carbon emissions come from transportation, which the bloc hopes to drastically cut in the next decade.

Ferrari's Combustion Supercars Get Extended Life with EU's E-Fuel Deal.

Ferrari's CEO, Benedetto Vigna, says that the EU's deal on e-fuels means that the automaker's internal combustion engine (ICE) cars can continue beyond 2036. However, Ferrari will still continue with its electrification plan, offering customers the choice between hybrid, electric, and ICE cars. The company's current financial plan already accounts for the possibility of ICEs being compatible with e-fuels.

Ferrari's stance on EU's electric car mandate and e-fuels deal

The European Commission has agreed to allow combustion engines to continue to be made as long as they run on carbon-neutral e-fuel, which is made from carbon sequestered from the atmosphere and combined with water to create combustible fuels that emit only as much carbon when burned as was used to make them. Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said the company still plans to electrify 80% of its lineup by 2030, but the rule change opens up new opportunities. Rival Italian exotic sports carmaker Lamborghini is about to begin transitioning all of its models to hybrid powertrains, but has no current plans to offer an electric car.

EU's E-Fuels Decision Divides Italy and Poland, Benefits Ferrari and Porsche.

Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna welcomed the EU's decision to exempt cars running on e-fuels from the 2035 phase-out of new combustion engine vehicles, saying it would give the luxury carmaker "greater freedom" on its power systems. Vigna said the company would pursue three power systems for its cars - hybrid, electric, and internal combustion engines (ICE) - and that the price of e-fuels was likely to come down as they are developed in coming years. Ferrari has promised its first full-electric vehicle for 2025 and said fully-electric and hybrid models would make up 80% of those in its range by 2030, while 20% would still be powered by ICE.
