The Future of Screen-Based Keyboards: Flat Panel Haptics and Liquid Tactile Buttons

Carnegie Mellon University's Future Interfaces Group has developed flat panel haptics, a technology that could replace physical keyboards with touchscreen ones. The technology uses embedded electroosmotic pumps to create pop-up buttons that measure almost five millimeters in height with enough pressure and rigidity to make them feel solid when pressed. The long-term goal is to implement this tech at a pixel level, so that keys can be any size and shape.

New Touchscreen Technology Allows Users to Feel Buttons on Screen

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University have created touchscreen devices that use embedded electroosmotic pumps to create pop-up buttons that can be felt by fingers. The technology, called Flat Panel Haptics, can create buttons measuring almost five millimeters in height with enough pressure and rigidity to make them feel solid when pressed. The limitations of the technology include pre-determined shape and size of the pop-up buttons, but eventually, any size and shape of tactile button could be generated on-demand.

US students beat NASA to land first robotic rover on moon.

A group of students, faculty, and alumni from Carnegie Mellon University have developed the Iris rover, which is set to become America's first robotic moon rover. The 4.4-pound rover will be carried to the moon as part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program and will primarily take images of the moon's surface for geographic study. The launch is scheduled for May 4, 2021, and will also carry an art installation called the MoonArk, a tiny time capsule filled with poems, music, pictures, and small objects.

College Students to Launch First Private American Rover to the Moon

A team of university students from Carnegie Mellon University is set to launch the first privately-made lunar rover, Iris, onto the Moon's surface on May 4th. Weighing just 2 kilograms, the rover will demonstrate its technology and take scientifically-relevant images. The team will work in shifts to monitor the rover's progress and health during its 60-hour mission. Iris will be the first civilian team to put a rover on the Moon and the smallest and lightest rover ever deployed. It will be carried to the Moon aboard a United Launch Alliance "Vulcan Centaur" rocket alongside a multi-purpose payload.
