"Breakthrough Synthetic Molecule Defeats Drug-Resistant Bacteria"
Researchers at UC Santa Barbara have developed a new class of antibiotics, called conjugated oligoelectrolytes (COEs), which have shown promise in overcoming drug-resistant bacteria. These COEs have demonstrated effectiveness against a broad array of bacterial infections and have the potential to evade antibiotic resistance. The compounds target bacterial membranes, inhibiting essential functions and disrupting biofilm formation. The research team is working on further refining the molecules for potential clinical trials, with support from various institutes and research collaborations globally.
