Shippers Collaborate to Accelerate Adoption of Clean Technologies.

Shippers are forming "green corridors" to fast-track cleaner technologies and reduce carbon emissions from the shipping industry, which produces nearly 3% of the world's total. More than 20 partnerships have been proposed, uniting marine fuel producers, vessel owners and operators, cargo owners, and ports in a common effort. The International Maritime Organization wants to halve its greenhouse gas releases by midcentury and may seek deeper cuts this year. Proposals range from slowing vessels down to charging them for emissions, as the European Union did last year.

US Government Allocates $2.5 Billion for Rural and Underserved EV Charging Infrastructure

The federal government's Joint Office of Energy and Transportation has opened applications for a $2.5 billion program to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure in underserved communities, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods and those with a low ratio of private parking. The program includes two $1.25 billion grant programs for community charging and fueling grants and alternative fuel corridor grants. The funds will also cover other alternative fuels, including hydrogen and natural gas. The program is part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.
