This weekend, early risers can observe a celestial triangle formed by Venus, the moon, and the star Aldebaran in the pre-dawn sky, with the trio appearing closest on July 21, offering a stunning view of these bright objects in the morning sky.
Early risers on July 13 and 14, 2023, will have the opportunity to witness a waning crescent moon near the Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters or Messier 45. The bright star Aldebaran will be nearby, forming part of the constellation Taurus the Bull. The Pleiades, visible as a tiny dipper, are a family of stars that can be observed with binoculars. The moon and Taurus will be visible above the eastern horizon shortly after 2 a.m., providing a beautiful sight before dawn.
This weekend offers several sky-gazing opportunities, including an "earthshine" on the crescent moon, the Pleiades star cluster, and the annual peak of the Lyrids meteor shower. Venus and Aldebaran will also be visible. The Lyrids can produce 18-20 meteors per hour and are the remnants of a comet that travels a 415-year orbit around the sun. To view the meteor shower, find an area away from city lights and lie flat on your back with your feet facing east.
