Roku's Patent: Plastering Ads Over Anything on Your TV

Roku has filed a patent for a system that would enable its TVs to display ads on top of any content being viewed through an HDMI connection, seizing moments of inactivity to overlay "relevant ads." The technology would monitor the video signal from external devices and use content recognition to identify onscreen content, allowing for targeted ad delivery. While filing such patents is common practice among big companies, the potential implementation of this invasive ad system reflects Roku's aggressive approach to advertising.

Biden campaign strategically targets battleground states with Thanksgiving football ads

The Biden campaign plans to air two TV ads during the Thanksgiving Day football game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers, targeting key battleground states of Michigan and Wisconsin. YouTube introduces unskippable 30-second ads on TV, with more to come.

YouTube is introducing 30-second unskippable ads on connected TVs, replacing the two 15-second consecutive ads that run today when advertisers target top videos through the YouTube Select program. YouTube Select offers advertisers access to a more curated, higher-quality selection of creators and publishers across various categories. YouTube's advertisers will be able to target their campaigns across these videos with longer, 30-second ads, which YouTube says better aligns with advertiser objectives and allows for "richer storytelling." The feature is arriving along with the addition of "Pause" ads on Connected TV devices, which will allow advertisers to showcase their brand when a video is paused.

Co-Founder of Pluto TV Plans to Give Away Ad-Supported TVs for Free

Teevee, a new company founded by Pluto TV's co-founder Ilya Pozin, plans to offer free TVs by bundling ads directly into the TV. The Teevee TV will include a decently-sized TV, a soundbar, and a second smaller screen that will show ads, local weather, news, sports scores, and more. The company's website says it is "coming later this year." Roku reportedly makes about $40 per year per user from its ads and subscriptions, and Teevee could potentially drive that rate up even more with the second screen.
