PennDOT's recent full closure of Parkway East served as a learning experience for managing large-scale road closures, revealing effective traffic flow on planned detours but also highlighting issues with local traffic and signal timing, which will be addressed before the major 25-day closure next year for the installation of the new Commercial Street Bridge.
The Minnesota Renaissance Festival experienced a significant improvement in traffic flow and parking on its opening day compared to previous years. The festival organizers hired Interstate Parking to manage parking while they focused on the activities. With the opening of new parking areas and increased ingress volume, traffic volumes were similar to last year but cars were getting off the freeways much faster. The festival reduced parking capacity to 7,000 spots and introduced prepayment options, resulting in smoother traffic and shorter wait times for festival-goers. The festival plans to increase park and ride options and expand parking capacity as the event continues.
A crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on eastbound I-40 near Eubank in Albuquerque resulted in one person being taken to the hospital. The Albuquerque Police Department temporarily shut down the highway, but as of 5:20 p.m., traffic flow has returned to normal.
