
TikTok outage exposes data-center woes and sweeping TOS privacy concerns
A power outage at a U.S. data center disrupted TikTok and CapCut, with users seeing uploads fail or receive zero views and load times worsen; TikTok’s USDS says recovery is underway and data remains safe, though some services may still glitch with no ETA for full restoration. Concurrently, TikTok updated its Terms of Service on Jan. 22 to expand data collection (including GPS, demographics, and other sensitive data), sparking privacy concerns and a California review led by Gov. Gavin Newsom as the company undergoes a US ownership transition involving Oracle.
