Spinal Cord Stimulation: A Promising Treatment for Depression
A study conducted at the University of Cincinnati suggests that electrical stimulation of the spinal cord has therapeutic potential for treating depression. By decreasing the flow of information between the brain and the body, the brain can readjust and regulate itself during depressive episodes. The pilot study involved 20 patients who received three 20-minute stimulation sessions per week for two months. The stimulated group experienced a notable decrease in the severity of their depression compared to the control group. The researchers believe that further research could establish a connection between the spine and psychological issues, and they plan to expand trial testing using a portable spinal cord stimulation device.
