SLAM Attack: A Major Security Flaw Threatens Intel, AMD, and Arm CPUs

Researchers have discovered a new side-channel attack called SLAM that exploits a feature in Intel CPUs called Linear Address Masking (LAM), as well as similar features in AMD and Arm CPUs. SLAM allows an attacker to leak sensitive information from kernel memory, including the root password hash. The attack increases the Spectre attack surface and impacts current and future CPUs from Intel, AMD, and Arm. AMD and Intel are working on mitigations, while Arm states that its systems already mitigate against Spectre v2. Linux maintainers have developed patches to disable LAM by default.

"Spectre: The Game Changer in Competitive Shooters"

Mountaintop Studios, founded by Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell, is developing a new competitive shooter called "Spectre" that features a unique "Duality" mechanic, allowing players to control two bodies in the game. The game has received positive feedback during its alpha playtests and features eight characters with unique abilities. While details about Mountaintop's ambitions for the game in esports are unclear, it is expected to make an impact in the gaming scene. The game is currently being playtested on PC, with no confirmation of a console release.

"Tim Burton's 'Big Fish' Movie Set House Destroyed by Lightning Strike in Millbrook"

One of the houses built for the set of Tim Burton's film "Big Fish" on Jackson Lake Island in Alabama has burned down due to a lightning strike. The island, which is home to the fictional town of Spectre, is a tourist attraction and remains open despite the fire. The privately owned island offers various recreational activities to the public.

"Unveiling the Unparalleled Opulence of the 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre EV"

Rolls-Royce has unveiled its first fully electric car, the Spectre, which was inspired by Charles Stewart Rolls' proclamation in 1900 about the suitability of electric motors for luxury cars. The Spectre features a striking design, utilizing Rolls-Royce's Architecture of Luxury platform and boasting a drag coefficient of 0.25. With a twin-motor powertrain and a 105 kWh lithium-ion battery, the Spectre is estimated to have an EPA range of at least 260 miles. While the car supports DC fast charging, Rolls-Royce acknowledges that its customers primarily charge at home or the office, as road trips are not typically undertaken in their vehicles.

"Devastating Lightning Strike Levels 'Big Fish' Movie Set House in Millbrook"

A house on the set of the 2003 movie "Big Fish" in Millbrook, Alabama, was destroyed by a fire caused by a lightning strike. The house was part of the fictitious town of Spectre on Jackson Lake Island, which is a popular tourist attraction. Fortunately, the goats on the island were unharmed as they were sheltered under a nearby church structure. This is not the first time Spectre has been affected by severe weather, as the island and surrounding areas were previously damaged by a tornado in 2021. The Millbrook Fire Department responded to the blaze, and no injuries were reported.

"New 14-Sided Shape Sheds Light on Natural Order"

A retired print technician from England discovered a 13-sided polygon called "the hat" that can completely cover an infinitely large flat surface without ever repeating the same pattern, making it the first "einstein" and solving a problem posed 60 years ago. The mathematician then discovered a new shape called "the spectre," which requires no mirror image, making it an even purer einstein. Both shapes are "stunning" and may lead to a deeper understanding of order in nature.

Mathematicians finally discover the elusive 'Spectre' aperiodic tile.

Mathematicians have discovered a 14-sided shape called the "Spectre" that can tile a surface without ever repeating or being flipped. The shape is the first example of an aperiodic monotile that tiles the plane without reflections. The discovery is the culmination of decades of hunting by mathematicians around the world, and it was made by a retired printing technician named David Smith. The team started with the original "hat" shape and added an extra side to it. That new shape still required its mirror image to fully tile, but the researchers discovered that by transforming the 14-sided shape's straight edges into curved ones, they could dispense with mirror images and work with just the one shape.

'Mathematicians discover elusive 'vampire Einstein' shape'

Mathematicians have discovered a 14-sided shape called "Spectre" that can tile a surface without repeating or being flipped, making it the first example of an aperiodic monotile that tiles the plane without reflections. The shape was discovered by adding an extra side to the original "hat" shape and transforming its straight edges into curved ones. The discovery culminates decades of hunting by mathematicians around the world for a shape that could completely tile a surface without ever repeating.

'Spectre' Emerges as True Aperiodic Monotile, Outdoing 'Einstein' and 'Vampire' Tiles.

Computer scientists have discovered a new aperiodic tile called "Spectre" that can completely cover a flat surface without repeating a specific pattern. This kind of tiling has been a tricky problem in mathematics for a long time. The previously discovered "Einstein" tile was considered a one-in-a-million shape, but Spectre is an even rarer discovery.
