A new study led by UCL suggests that the number of people living with dementia in England and Wales could reach 1.7 million by 2040, a significant increase of over 40% from previous projections. The research indicates that dementia incidence started to increase after 2008, reversing the previous decline observed in high-income countries. The study also highlights growing disparities in dementia rates between educational groups, with lower educational attainment associated with slower decline and a more rapid increase in dementia cases. The anticipated surge in dementia cases will have a profound impact on individuals and place considerable strain on healthcare and social care systems.
