Drones push Sudan's war front into Kordofan, civilians pay the price

Drone strikes have moved the Sudanese civil war’s focus to south-central Kordofan, where near-daily attacks on markets, health facilities and homes are driving mass displacement and famine-like conditions in besieged Kadugli and Dilling. The Sudanese armed forces have regained some ground and broken sieges, while the RSF—with SPLM-N and various regional backers—keeps pressure elsewhere. The UN and humanitarian groups are pleading for civilian protection amid growing concerns of a broader regional spillover and continued hardship for civilians.

Drones Redraw Sudan's War as Rival Factions Turn to UAVs

Al Jazeera’s investigation shows Sudan’s civil war since April 2023 increasingly relies on drones used by both the SAF and RSF, with sources including Iran, the UAE and Turkey. The RSF employs kamikaze and heavier drones (and improvised quadcopters), while the SAF uses platforms like Mohajer-6; supply chains move drone parts and munitions through hubs in Chad, Eritrea, Libya and beyond to evade embargoes. Drone strikes have broadened civilian harm and infrastructure damage, reshaping warfare in Sudan.

US Imposes Sanctions on Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflict

The US has imposed its first sanctions related to the conflict in Sudan, targeting two firms associated with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and two others linked to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The White House also said it was imposing visa restrictions "against actors who are perpetuating the violence". The RSF and the Sudanese military have been locked in a fight to control the state and its resources since mid-April, killing hundreds and displacing more than 1.3 million people. The US says its primary aim in Sudan is to reduce the violence before working towards a permanent end to the fighting and a return to civilian rule in the country.

Green Aviation: Europe's Business Jets Aim for Emissions Reduction.

The European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) is focusing on sustainability this year as the private jet industry faces pressure to become more environmentally friendly. CO2 emissions from private jets in Europe grew by 31% between 2005 and 2019, leading to increased scrutiny from regulators and activists. The conference will showcase innovations in the sector, including electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). However, jetmakers are struggling with low supply of SAF and economic troubles have led to a downturn in business jet flights in Europe.

The Risk of Outsiders in Sudan's Home-Grown War.

The ongoing civil war in Sudan, which started as a power struggle between the official army and a paramilitary organization, risks drawing in outsiders due to Sudan's geopolitical importance. Sudan sits astride the Nile and has ports close to the Horn of Africa, which controls the southern chokepoint of the Red Sea and is close to the Persian Gulf. The conflict has already claimed over 500 civilian lives and displaced many more. The RSF, which controls key parts of the capital, has managed to secure the international airport and the country's largest oil refinery. The SAF, on the other hand, has control of the skies. The Gulf countries, Russia, and neighboring conflict-racked countries may meddle in the conflict, and a wider conflagration may still be avoided.

Sudan's RSF announces ceasefire, but fighting persists.

Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has declared a 72-hour ceasefire ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, but fighting continues with no confirmation of a ceasefire by its rival Sudan Armed Forces (SAF). The death toll has climbed to over 330 people, and most hospitals in the capital Khartoum are out of operation. The World Food Program (WFP) warned that the fighting could force millions into hunger. The US Defense Department is deploying additional capabilities nearby Sudan to secure the US Embassy in the country and assist with a potential evacuation.
