A new study by researchers at Tufts University has found that poor diet is responsible for 70% of all new diagnoses of Type 2 diabetes globally. The study found that insufficient whole grains, excess refined rice and wheat, and the overconsumption of processed meat were the biggest contributors to the disease. Surprisingly, overconsumption of fruit juice and underconsumption of non-starchy vegetables, nuts or seeds didn’t impact the development of the condition quite as much. The study suggests that poor carbohydrate quality is a leading driver of diet-attributable Type 2 diabetes globally. Experts recommend consuming whole grains far more often than refined grains to potentially help ward off Type 2 diabetes.

The Link Between Diet and Type 2 Diabetes: New Research Findings.

A new study found that unbalanced eating patterns contributed to over 14.1 million cases of type 2 diabetes worldwide in 2018. Out of the 11 dietary factors examined, insufficient intake of whole grains, excesses of refined rice and wheat, and overconsumption of processed meat played the largest role in increasing type 2 diabetes risk. Incorporating more whole grains, reducing intake of refined grains, and replacing processed red meats with other protein options can help lower the risk of developing diabetes.
