Amy Siewe, a former real estate agent, has become a full-time guide teaching people how to find and euthanize invasive Burmese pythons in the Florida Everglades. Florida has organized state-sponsored competitions to raise awareness and reward hunters who catch and humanely kill the most pythons. The program pays contractors to hunt pythons throughout the year, but some hunters like Siewe have struck out on their own. Pythons have decimated native wildlife since they were introduced as exotic pets, and efforts to eliminate them have been largely unsuccessful. Hunting pythons is a challenging and time-consuming task, but every python removed helps save the lives of native animals.

A 19-foot, 125-pound Burmese python, the longest ever captured in Florida, was caught in Naples by a group of individuals, some of whom had never been python-hunting before. The snake put up a fight, requiring a change in technique to safely capture it. The Southwest Florida Conservancy has measured the snake and plans to conduct tests to learn more about it.
