Researchers have developed a novel method to deflect laser beams using air alone. By modulating the air with sound waves, an optical grating is created that changes the direction of the laser light. This technique allows for precise control of laser beams without contact, preserving their quality. In initial tests, a strong infrared laser pulse was redirected with 50% efficiency, and higher efficiencies are expected in the future. The researchers see potential applications in high-performance optics, where traditional optical elements are limited by material properties and susceptibility to damage from strong laser beams.
