Oregon State Parks will be hosting star parties in collaboration with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) on Saturday night, providing visitors with the opportunity to set up telescopes and enjoy stargazing.
Western Oregon, including the Portland area, will have one of the best views of the partial solar eclipse occurring on October 14, with the moon blocking roughly 85% of the sun. Southwestern Oregon will experience an even better view, with the moon blocking nearly 89% of the sun's diameter. Known as the "ring of fire," this annular eclipse will be visible in the region, and safety precautions should be taken when viewing the eclipse.
The Perseid meteor shower, one of the brightest meteor showers on Earth, has already begun and will peak between August 9 and 13. Oregon Coast Beach Connection has already witnessed some impressive moments, including shooting stars and a satellite. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is hosting a Perseid Meteor Shower Watch on August 12 at Rooster Rock State Park. The Perseids are caused by debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle and can be seen as bright streaks across the night sky. The best viewing conditions are expected on the evening of August 11-12, with the moon's absence aiding visibility.
