Norfolk Southern Settles for $310M Over Ohio Train Derailment
Norfolk Southern has agreed to pay over $310 million to settle claims and cover costs from last year's hazardous materials train derailment in Ohio, and will invest $200 million in safety upgrades. The settlement includes a $15 million civil penalty, the maximum allowed by law, but the railroad does not admit liability and won't face criminal charges. Some residents affected by the derailment feel the penalties are insufficient given the company's profits.
