Diet and Medication Combo Reprograms Childhood Neuroblastoma

The study demonstrates that combining a diet free of proline and arginine with the polyamine synthesis inhibitor DFMO significantly suppresses neuroblastoma growth in mouse models by depleting polyamines, inducing tumor differentiation, and disrupting translation at specific codons, offering a promising therapeutic strategy for this childhood cancer.

"Using Zika Virus to Target Deadly Cancers"

Researchers in Florida are exploring the potential of using the Zika virus as a therapy for neuroblastoma, a deadly childhood cancer, by targeting the CD24 protein that is overexpressed in these tumors. In a study on mice, the virus led to significant reduction and even complete elimination of neuroblastoma tumors. While this approach shows promise, further studies are needed to ensure its safety before moving on to clinical trials. Zika virus, typically spread by mosquitoes and through unprotected sex, has shown potential to be an effective bridge therapy for high-risk neuroblastoma patients and possibly for other cancers expressing high levels of CD24.

Misdiagnosed: Parents thought 3-year-old had a virus, but it was Stage 4 cancer

A Scottish couple rushed their 3-year-old daughter to the hospital after she exhibited odd symptoms, only to find out she had Stage 4 high risk neuroblastoma. The toddler has completed six rounds of chemotherapy and will undergo a higher dose of chemo and a stem cell transplant as part of her 18-month treatment. Her family is fundraising to send her to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC for a vaccine trial to stop the cancer from returning. Without the treatment, Ava is more likely to relapse, reducing her chances of survival.

New Treatment Offers Hope for Childhood Cancer

A novel treatment using CAR-T cell therapy appears to work against tumors in children with neuroblastoma, a rare kind of cancer. Nine of 27 children in the Italian study had no sign of cancer six weeks after the treatment, although two later relapsed and died. The treatment harnesses the immune system to create “living drugs” able to seek and destroy tumors. It is too soon to call it a cure for neuroblastoma, but the results raise hopes that it can be used against other kinds of cancers.

Genetically-engineered T-cells show promise against rare and high-risk cancers.

A novel treatment using CAR-T cell therapy appears to work against tumors in children with neuroblastoma, a rare kind of cancer. Nine of 27 children in the Italian study had no sign of cancer six weeks after the treatment, although two later relapsed and died. The treatment is already used to help the immune system fight leukemia and other cancers in the blood. This is the first time researchers have achieved such encouraging results in solid tumors, experts in the field said, and raises hopes that it can be used against other kinds of cancers.
