UK's First MS Patient Trials Groundbreaking 'Gamechanger' Treatment

A Hertfordshire mother and biology teacher, Emily Henders, has become the first UK patient to receive a pioneering CAR T cell therapy in a clinical trial aimed at treating multiple sclerosis, a disease that causes immune system attacks on nerves. The experimental treatment, which depletes B cells to reset the immune system, offers hope for slowing or halting disease progression and could be a gamechanger if successful.

"DMT Survey, Keto Diet, and Gilenya Generic: MS News Highlights"

A survey of neurologists in the U.S. rates Kesimpta, Ocrevus, and Briumvi as the best disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The ketogenic diet has shown potential benefits for people with RRMS, including reduced body fat, improved symptoms, and increased exercise capacity, but adherence can be challenging. A real-world study in Turkey suggests that a generic version of Gilenya is safe and effective, although long-term data is needed to maintain confidence in generic MS treatments.

Advancements in MS Treatment: New Gadolinium Agent, Myelin, and High-Efficacy DMTs

A Phase 3 clinical trial will test a new gadolinium-based MRI contrast agent, gadoquatrane, which uses a dose that is 60% lower than other agents, potentially addressing concerns about kidney problems. Research suggests that myelin-coated nerves may be more vulnerable to inflammatory damage than uncoated ones, opening new avenues for multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment. A study recommends starting MS treatment with high-efficacy disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) to achieve better outcomes, challenging the practice of prescribing less-effective DMTs as first-line treatments.

Updates on MS: Facial Surgery, UK Rates, Omega-3, and Remyelination.

Surgery has been found successful for some MS patients with facial pain. The MS incidence rate in the UK is holding steady. Omega-3 fatty acids may be a key to keeping the myelin coating of some of our nerves in good shape. Retinoic acid may ease inflammation in people with MS and stimulate the growth of myelin forming cells in the central nervous system.

Updates on EBV vaccine trial, DMT costs, and Mavenclad in MS news.

EBViously plans to bring its candidate vaccine against the Epstein-Barr virus into clinical trials starting in 2024, which could reduce the incidence of MS. A study found that the costs of infusible DMTs, Ocrevus, Tysabri, and Lemtrada, accounted for more than three-quarters of the total costs, and controlling price markups for medications could help limit healthcare costs for patients. A real-world data study says the benefits of Mavenclad were sustained for up to 15 years after its last treatment course in people with relapsing MS. The FDA has put a partial hold on trials of evobrutinib in MS after two patients in Phase 3 clinical trials were found to have elevations in their liver enzymes.
