A man shot and killed by law enforcement during an armed standoff in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, was identified as Tyler Abel, a corrections officer with the Minnesota Department of Corrections. Abel had been hired in April 2022 and was well-liked by his colleagues. Law enforcement responded to a domestic disturbance call and found Abel holding a hunting rifle. He threatened the authorities and was shot and killed by a St. Croix County deputy and New Richmond officer. The incident is under investigation.

Transgender Inmate Settles Lawsuit, to be Moved to Women's Prison in Minnesota

Christina Lusk, a transgender woman who sued the Minnesota Department of Corrections over her treatment while in prison, has reached a settlement that includes a move to the state's women-only Shakopee prison and access to gender-affirming health care. Lusk had been fighting for these rights since she was incarcerated in 2019 and filed the lawsuit against the Minnesota Department of Corrections nearly a year ago. As part of the settlement, Lusk will also receive a $495,000 payout, which includes about $250,000 in legal fees.

Criminal history of suspect in killing of Wisconsin deputy.

The suspect accused of shooting and killing St. Croix County Deputy Kaitie Leising had a lengthy criminal history, including prior convictions for aggravated assault and DWI. Jeremiah Johnson was on supervised release from the Minnesota Department of Corrections for a 2015 felony conviction when he allegedly shot Leising. Johnson was later found dead with a handgun nearby. Leising's funeral is scheduled for noon on Friday at Hudson High School.
