"The Impact of Air Hunger on Endurance Athletes"

A new study reanalyzing lung-function tests found that about a third of healthy adults experience air hunger during all-out exercise, with the fittest people being most susceptible. This feeling, associated with lung conditions, can limit performance and is linked to a negative emotional response. The study suggests that fitter individuals may push themselves harder, reaching their breathing limits, and raises questions about the factors determining air hunger and potential interventions, such as training breathing muscles or using asthma medication.

Potential Lung Risks Found in New Cholesterol Medications, Reveals Global Study

A groundbreaking global study analyzing genetic data from 340,000 UK Biobank participants has found that PCSK9 inhibitors, a new class of cholesterol-lowering drugs, could potentially impair lung function. The study also revealed correlations between statins and higher BMI, body fat, and reduced testosterone, while unexpectedly noting an increase in hippocampus brain volume that may lower dementia and depression risks. Further research is needed to understand the long-term effects of these medications and to assess their safety and potential benefits.

Long-Term Lung Impairment Found in COVID Survivors

A Dutch study published in PLOS One found that one year after COVID-19 infection, 25% of survivors had impaired lung function. Older patients, those with more chronic conditions, and those with severe cases showed slower improvement over time. The study involved 301 COVID-19 survivors who underwent lung-function tests. Patients with moderate and severe/critical disease severities should be targeted for revalidation guidelines. However, the study also showed that COVID-related lung damage can be reversed to some degree over time, and quality of life improved at the one-year mark.

Cannabis smoking not associated with COPD, says study.

New research shows that smoking cannabis doesn’t carry the same risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as smoking tobacco. While any smoke is damaging to the lungs, whether it comes from cannabis or tobacco, the data suggests that smoking cannabis is not as damaging on the lungs as smoking cigarettes. Cannabis use is associated with numerous health benefits, but there are also drawbacks for chronic users. Experts recommend avoiding smoking or vaping and seeking out alternative ways to consume cannabis.

Mint-flavored Vapes Linked to Lung Damage and Calls for Ban

Adding mint flavor to e-cigarette liquids produces more vapor particles and is associated with worse lung function in those who smoke, according to researchers from the University of Pittsburgh. The study used a robotic system to mimic human breathing and vaping behavior and found that commercially available e-cigarette liquids containing menthol generate a greater number of toxic microparticles compared to menthol-free juice. The study suggests that menthol additives could be just as dangerous as vitamin E acetate, which was strongly linked to lung injury in users of e-cigarettes and vapes.
