Utilities Nationwide Alert Customers to Potential Lead in Water Pipes

Birmingham Water Works is notifying over 71,000 customers about potential lead pipes in their homes, as required by new EPA rules. The letters target homes built before 1989, advising residents to check for lead risks. The utility offers free water filter pitchers if lead is detected and encourages in-home testing. Lead exposure is particularly harmful to children and pregnant women. The initiative is part of a broader plan to replace lead service lines, following a 2019 consent order with Alabama's environmental department.

"VP Harris Unveils $5.8 Billion Plan for Clean Water and Infrastructure Upgrades"

The Biden administration has announced $5.8 billion in funding to address the nation's ailing water infrastructure, aiming to ensure safer drinking water and more reliable wastewater systems. The investment will be used to remove lead pipes, improve sanitation, and address contaminants like PFAS chemicals. While the funding is a step in the right direction, experts emphasize that it's just a fraction of what's needed to fully address the country's water infrastructure challenges.

"Biden administration's plan: Replacing lead pipes in cities within 10 years"

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed strict new rules that would require most U.S. cities to replace lead water pipes within 10 years, aiming to reduce lead in drinking water and prevent public health crises like those in Flint, Michigan, and Washington, D.C. The proposal, the strongest overhaul of lead rules in over three decades, would cost billions of dollars and improve IQ scores in children while reducing high blood pressure and heart disease in adults. Lead pipes, which can leach lead into tap water, are most common in older, industrial parts of the country, and their removal is part of a broader federal effort to combat lead exposure. The public will have a chance to comment on the proposal before it goes into effect.

"Biden administration takes action to eliminate lead pipes and protect public health"

The Biden administration has proposed strict new rules that would require most U.S. cities to replace lead water pipes within 10 years, aiming to reduce lead in drinking water and prevent public health crises. The proposal, the strongest overhaul of lead rules in over three decades, would improve IQ scores in children and reduce high blood pressure and heart disease in adults. Lead pipes, which are most common in older, industrial parts of the country, have disproportionately affected poorer, majority-Black cities like Flint. The proposal also includes stricter limits on lead-based paint and aims to eliminate lead in aviation fuel. The public will have a chance to comment on the proposal before it goes into effect.

"Biden's Bold Plan: Replacing All Lead Water Pipes in the US within 10 Years"

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed strict new rules that would require most U.S. cities to replace lead water pipes within 10 years, aiming to reduce lead in drinking water and prevent public health crises. The proposal, called the lead and copper rule improvements, is the strongest overhaul of lead rules in over three decades and would cost billions of dollars. Lead crises, such as those in Flint and Washington, D.C., have disproportionately affected poorer, majority-Black cities. The Biden administration sees this as an opportunity to address the injustice and ensure safe drinking water for all. The public will have a chance to comment on the proposal before it goes into effect.

"Biden's Bold Plan: Nationwide Replacement of Lead Pipes in 10 Years"

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a rule that would require water systems in the country to replace millions of lead service lines within 10 years, aiming to remove 100% of lead pipes. Lead exposure is linked to significant health and developmental problems, especially for children. The proposed rule would strengthen testing and compliance requirements, including a minimum of 10% of lead pipes replaced each year. Compliance is estimated to cost billions of dollars, but the benefits in terms of public health prevention are expected to be four to 10 times greater. The Biden administration has allocated $15 billion for lead service line removal, and there is additional funding available. The EPA will collect public comments on the proposed rule for 60 days.

EPA survey reveals millions of lead pipes in US water systems, Florida has the most.

A new survey by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that 9.2 million lead pipes carry water into homes across the US, with Florida having the most at an estimated 1.16 million. The survey will be used to direct billions of dollars from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to water infrastructure upgrades, including finding and removing lead pipes. The Biden administration has set a goal to remove all of the country’s lead water pipes, but the $15 billion from the infrastructure law for lead pipe work will not be enough to solve the problem. The EPA also announced that states, U.S. territories and tribes will have $6.5 billion to upgrade drinking water infrastructure, with $6 billion of that total coming from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
