Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Spreads Across Multiple Cities
Duke University has experienced an unprecedented outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) on its East Campus, with approximately 60 cases reported in the past four weeks. The outbreak primarily affects the Class of 2027 and is unusual for a college campus, as HFMD is more commonly found in children. Symptoms of HFMD include fever, sore throat, mouth sores, and a skin rash on the hands and feet. While most cases are mild and self-limited, some students have experienced more severe cases. There is no specific treatment for HFMD, and students are advised to wear masks, wash hands frequently, and self-isolate until the rash has mostly resolved.
