Study Links Common Artificial Sweeteners to Faster Cognitive Decline
A Neurology study of 12,772 adults over ~8 years finds that higher artificial sweetener intake (aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-K, erythritol, sorbitol, xylitol) is linked to a 62% faster decline in thinking and memory versus low users—about 1.6 years of aging—with diabetes amplifying the effect. The study is observational and does not prove causation; experts suggest moderating intake and focusing on whole foods, activity, and sleep for brain health.
