Tensions Rise as Poland's Grain Transit Plans Spark Controversy

Polish President Andrzej Duda supports the ban on Ukrainian grain imports to the Polish market, but emphasizes the need to increase transit of Ukrainian grain through Poland to third countries. Special transit corridors are being prepared to facilitate this. The ongoing "grain crisis" between Ukraine and Poland has led to a complaint filed by Ukraine with the World Trade Organization, and the two countries' agriculture ministers are expected to meet soon to resolve the dispute.

"EU and Ukraine reach agreement on grain transit with 5 member countries"

The European Commission has reached a deal in principle with Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia to allow the transit of Ukrainian grain through their countries, which had previously imposed restrictions due to concerns that Ukrainian grain was being sold in their local markets. The deal includes safeguard measures for wheat, maize, rapeseed, and sunflower seed, as well as a support package worth 100 million euros for local farmers. The transit ban had trapped millions of tons of grains in countries bordering Ukraine, forcing local farmers to compete with an influx of cheap Ukrainian imports that distorted prices and demand.

Ukraine's food exports face bans and plummeting sales.

Hungary has called for "progressive" aid from the EU to help move Ukraine's grain through central European countries whose farmers are having to compete with its cheaper imports. The European Commission said on Wednesday it would take emergency "preventive measures" for wheat, maize, sunflower seeds and rapeseed after some central European countries took unilateral steps to ban imports of food products from Ukraine.

Poland and Ukraine reach deal on grain transit.

Poland has agreed to restart transit of Ukrainian grains through its territory, which had been banned earlier. The transits will be monitored and sealed. However, the ban on imports of Ukrainian food products to Poland will remain in place. The issue has created a problem for the ruling nationalist Law and Justice party in an election year. Pressure has been mounting on Brussels to work out an EU-wide solution after Warsaw and Budapest announced bans on some imports from Ukraine.

Ukraine's grain transit faces hurdles in Poland and Hungary.

Ukraine aims to reopen food and grain transit via Poland as "a first step" at talks in Warsaw on Monday, after Poland and Hungary announced bans on some imports from Ukraine. Some Black Sea ports were blocked after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February last year, which hit prices and sales for local farmers. Talks between Ukraine and Poland were due to start in Warsaw around 12:00 p.m. (1000 GMT), Polish Agriculture Minister Robert Telus said on TVP Info.
