The European Commission has reached a deal in principle with Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia to allow the transit of Ukrainian grain through their countries, which had previously imposed restrictions due to concerns that Ukrainian grain was being sold in their local markets. The deal includes safeguard measures for wheat, maize, rapeseed, and sunflower seed, as well as a support package worth 100 million euros for local farmers. The transit ban had trapped millions of tons of grains in countries bordering Ukraine, forcing local farmers to compete with an influx of cheap Ukrainian imports that distorted prices and demand.
