"Exploring Europa: The Debate on Sending Humans"

While Europa, Jupiter's icy moon, has a massive liquid ocean that could potentially harbor life, sending humans there is deemed a terrible idea due to the intense radiation environment. Even radiation-hardened spacecraft electronics require thick shielding to survive. An orbital colony could fare better, but it would still face major logistical challenges and would require external support for food and breathable air, which would be a decade away. Overall, human exploration of Europa is currently deemed infeasible and unlikely to provide more benefit than orbiting spacecraft, landers/rovers, or autonomous drills.

Unveiling the Environmental Impact of Natural Subsurface Hydrogen Production

A life-cycle assessment conducted by Stanford University engineer Adam Brandt explores the feasibility of extracting hydrogen from natural subsurface accumulations, known as geological hydrogen extraction. The study examines the environmental impact, availability, and challenges associated with this method. While there are hurdles to overcome, Brandt suggests that further research into geological hydrogen extraction is warranted, as it has the potential to be no worse than "green hydrogen" produced by splitting water molecules.

AI experts predict 40% of domestic tasks automated within a decade

About 40% of domestic tasks, including grocery shopping, laundry, and household cleaning, could be automated within the next decade, according to a survey of 65 AI experts from Japan and the UK. However, tasks involving caring for children, pets, and elderly relatives were viewed as less likely to be automated due to social considerations. The experts were instructed to only consider the technical feasibility of automating tasks, but many respondents were unable or unwilling to do so in isolation of societal factors.

The Cost-Benefit Analysis of Constructing a Dyson Sphere.

Physicists explore the feasibility of building a Dyson sphere around our sun to capture solar energy. While the technology to build such a structure is not yet available, the thought experiment can help us understand fundamental principles of energy, orbit, and motion. Building a Dyson sphere would require a significant energy investment, and the optimal design would need to minimize this initial cost. Simplifying the problem helps cover up mistakes and enables a general sense of feasibility.
