Ford Battery Plant Workers in Kentucky Launch Unionization Effort

Workers at Ford's BlueOval SK battery plants in Glendale, Kentucky, are campaigning to unionize, with a majority having signed authorization cards to join the United Auto Workers (UAW). Currently, BlueOval SK workers earn $21 an hour, compared to $26.32 for UAW workers at other Ford plants. Despite a previous agreement suggesting these workers wouldn't unionize, the UAW is pushing for better wages and conditions, aiming to set strong standards in the EV battery industry. The first plant is set to open in 2025, with full job targets expected by 2030.

GM partners with Element 25 to strengthen US EV battery supply chain

General Motors (GM) has signed a deal with Australian-based supplier Element 25 to expand manganese sulfate production in the US, a key EV battery component. Under the agreement, Element 25 will provide GM with up to 32,500 metric tons of manganese sulfate annually to help the automaker hit its goal of producing over one million EVs in North America by 2025. The deal also includes an $85 million GM-funded loan to help Element 25 fund the construction of a new battery-grade manganese sulfate facility in Louisiana, expected to be the first of its kind.

Indiana lands $3.5B battery plant, creating 1700 jobs.

General Motors will build its EV battery complex with Samsung SDI on about 650 acres of agricultural land in St. Joseph County, Indiana, in a $3.5 billion project that will employ more than 1,600 people. The plant will help supply cells for millions of all-electric cars across North America. The project is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and could take more than two years to complete. The plant would generate an annual economic impact of $652 million once it’s fully operational.
