Nearly 1.5 million foreign pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, with more expected to come. The pilgrimage returns to its monumental scale after three years of heavy restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Saudi officials expect the number of pilgrims to reach pre-pandemic levels, with hundreds of thousands of Saudis and others living in Saudi Arabia also joining them. The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and all Muslims are required to undertake it at least once in their lives if they are physically and financially able to do so.
Physician Mandy Cohen has been announced as the next director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by the Biden administration. Cohen, a former North Carolina health secretary, will take over an agency that has been battered by the coronavirus pandemic. Her first day at the CDC will be in early July, and she will replace outgoing director Rochelle Walensky. Cohen's leadership experience in federal and state government, oversight of North Carolina's coronavirus response, and track record of working with Republicans and the private sector were cited as reasons for her selection.
The World Bank has predicted a sharp slowdown in the global economy this year, citing high interest rates, the impact of the Ukraine war, and the lingering effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The bank estimates that the international economy will expand just 2.1% in 2023 after growing 3.1% in 2022. However, the bank's latest Global Economic Prospects report marks an upgrade from its previous forecast in January. The report also predicts that global trade will slow markedly this year, and foresees a sharp drop in the price of energy and other commodities this year and next.
The number of people internally displaced worldwide reached an all-time high of 71.1 million in 2022 due to a combination of conflict, natural disasters, and the ongoing effects of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report by the Norwegian Refugee Council. The war in Ukraine and flooding in Pakistan were major contributors to the displacement crisis. Nearly three-quarters of the world’s internally displaced people live in just 10 countries, including Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The report does not include refugees fleeing to other countries.
Walt Disney World will resume selling three levels of its annual passes to its theme parks from April 20, including the Incredi-Pass, the Sorcerer Pass, and the Pirate Pass. The passes will be available online, and a limited number of passes will be available. The new-sales date comes two days after Disney’s park reservations system gets tweaked. Disney first suspended sales of new annual passes during its four-month shutdown for the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and resumed sales in September 2021 with new prices, restrictions, and names, before suspending sales again that November.
New York state is set to lower its minimum test scores for student proficiency in math and English after a "learning loss" during the pandemic. The changes come after the scores for third through eighth grade tests slumped in 2022 compared to 2019. The committee is now resetting the lowest scores for each test to be deemed proficient. In 2019, 45.4% of New York’s students were graded proficient in English and 46.7% were in math.
