"Oral Bacteria Interaction Produces Compound Behind Bad Breath"

A study published in mSystems reveals that the interaction between two common oral bacteria, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Streptococcus gordonii, leads to the production of a chemical compound, methyl mercaptan, which is a major cause of bad breath. The researchers found that S. gordonii prompts F. nucleatum to produce more methyl mercaptan by releasing a substance called ornithine, which activates F. nucleatum's methionine salvage pathway. Understanding this bacterial interaction could aid in developing treatments for bad breath and preventing associated periodontal disease.

"Novel Compound Offers Hope for Nerve Regeneration in Paralysis Patients"

Scientists have discovered a new chemical compound called "1938" that can help regenerate damaged nerves after injury. The compound activates the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway, which is involved in cell growth. The compound also reduced heart tissue damage after major trauma in animal models and regenerated lost motor function. The results of the study indicate nerve regeneration, which could potentially lead to drugs that activate PI3K to accelerate nerve regeneration and provide tissue protection.

"New Chemical Compound Shows Promise in Nerve Regeneration and Heart Protection"

Scientists have discovered a new chemical compound, 1938, that could help regenerate nerve cells and potentially reverse paralysis and lost functioning caused by nerve injuries. The compound activates an enzyme, phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), which governs cell growth and is involved in various processes like wound healing. The growth of nerve cells increased significantly when 1938 was added to lab-grown nerve cells, and tests in rats with nerve injuries showed increased recovery and the restoration of some motor function. The researchers are working on developing new therapies to treat peripheral nerve damage, such as that sustained in serious hand and arm injuries, and are also looking into other ways drugs that activate PI3K could treat other types of nerve damage, including that from spinal cord injury, stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Asteroid samples reveal RNA building blocks for life on Earth.

Scientists have discovered the chemical compound uracil, one of the building blocks of RNA, in just 10 milligrammes of material from the asteroid Ryugu, according to new research published on Tuesday. The finding lends weight to a longstanding theory that life on Earth may have been seeded from outer space when asteroids crashed into our planet carrying fundamental elements. The discovery offers "strong evidence that one of the RNA components has been provided to the Earth even before the emergence of life", said Yasuhiro Oba, associate professor at Hokkaido University and an author of the research.
