Biden administration strengthens truck safety measures with expanded braking system proposal.

The Biden administration has proposed a rule to require automatic emergency braking systems for heavy vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds, as well as other types of large trucks. Officials also proposed amending Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to require heavy vehicles to have electronic stability control systems. Both systems, if installed on all vehicles, could prevent an estimated 19,118 crashes and prevent 8,814 nonfatal injuries annually. The rise in road deaths has elevated concerns, with nearly 43,000 people killed on U.S. roads last year.

"Federal Agencies Push for Automatic Emergency Braking on Heavy Trucks and Buses"

The FMCSA and NHTSA have proposed a rule that would require automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems on heavy-duty trucks. The proposed standard would require the technology to work at speeds ranging between low-speed and high-speed situations. The rule would also require that nearly all heavy vehicles have an electronic stability control system. The NHTSA estimates that the proposed rule will prevent 19,118 crashes, save 155 lives, and prevent 8,814 injuries annually. The FMCSA and NHTSA are accepting public comment on the AEB rule for 60 days following the official publication of the NPRM.

NHTSA proposes mandatory automatic emergency braking for new cars.

The NHTSA has proposed new safety standards that would require automatic emergency braking (AEB) and pedestrian AEB systems on all new vehicles, regardless of powertrain. The proposed standards could save about 360 lives and prevent 24,000 injuries each year. If passed, automakers would have three years to comply with the mandate, which would require all cars to be able to stop and avoid contact with a vehicle in front of them up to 62 miles per hour. Tesla's vehicles would likely remain a cut above the standard when it comes to safety, as the company's AEB systems are already advanced and continue to improve.

US Government Proposes Mandating Automatic Braking in New Cars

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed new rules that would require new cars to be equipped with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The proposed rule would require improvements to most systems that are available today, including preventing crashes at speeds of up to 50 miles an hour, or 62 mph with some braking being applied by the driver. NHTSA has projected that, if the new rules are finalized, they could prevent about 360 deaths annually and prevent 24,000 injuries.

US Government Mandates Automatic Emergency Brakes in All New Vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed new rules that would mandate automatic emergency braking systems in all new vehicles within three years. The new rules would increase the speeds at which they operate and also require pedestrian detection capability in light duty models. The regulations would require the feature to be able to avoid a collision autonomously up to 50 mph and up to 62 mph if the driver also reacts and hits the brake pedal. NHTSA estimates that the feature's availability will save 360 lives and reduce injuries by at least 24,000 each year.

US Government Proposes Mandatory Automatic Emergency Braking for New Vehicles

The Biden administration has proposed a new rule that would require all new cars and SUVs to come equipped with automatic emergency braking systems that could avoid crashes at high speeds and protect pedestrians, even in the dark. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the technology could save more than 300 lives a year and help to avoid 24,000 injuries. The proposal represents one of the most significant efforts to update car safety rules in years and would be a clear example of how technology could help human drivers.

Automatic Emergency Braking Becomes Standard in Latest US Vehicles

General Motors (GM) has announced that it will make five active safety features standard on all its 2023 and newer EVs, including Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), which is included in 98% of GM's 2023 models, surpassing its commitment to add AEB to 95% of its vehicles. The automaker cites safety research data from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) to inform the decision, which showed that AEB combined with Forward Collision Alert reduced rear-end crashes by 42%. GM is also upgrading the front sensors in some of its gas-powered vehicles to include AEB and other safety features.
