VA Research Highlights: Agent Orange linked to acral melanoma, gut bacteria tied to Parkinson's, and a heart drug may curb opioid withdrawal

VA researchers publish three News Briefs: exposure to Agent Orange is linked to a higher risk of acral melanoma (a rare form of skin cancer); a gut bacterium, Desulfovibrio vulgaris, may drive Parkinson's disease by promoting alpha-synuclein buildup and affecting dopamine signaling; and acetazolamide, a heart disease drug, reversed opioid withdrawal–related brain changes in a mouse model, suggesting potential non-opioid treatments for substance-use disorders.

"VA Proposes Expanded Benefits for Veterans Exposed to Agent Orange in the US"

The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to expand disability benefits for veterans exposed to Agent Orange in the United States, following the passage of the PACT Act. This move will provide fast-track disability benefits to veterans suffering from illnesses dating back to the Vietnam War era, including those who served in locations where herbicides were tested, used, or stored outside of Vietnam. The new rules will take several months to go into effect and will benefit veterans who may have been exposed to Agent Orange in various states and foreign locations. This expansion aims to provide easier access to benefits for veterans exposed to toxic chemicals during their military service.

Lawsuit filed against EPA for reapproving toxic herbicides with Agent Orange chemical.

Public health groups are suing the US Environmental Protection Agency over the reapproval of two toxic herbicides made with an active ingredient in Agent Orange, a chemical weapon deployed by the US to destroy vegetation in the Vietnam war, and which caused huge health problems among soldiers and Vietnamese residents. The suit alleges the EPA failed to properly calculate the human health risks and harm to endangered species associated with widely spreading the chemical on US cropland during the reapproval process. The herbicide is also prone to damaging non-GMO crops or vegetation on neighboring fields.
