Spectacular Video Captures Massive Solar 'Canyon of Fire' Eruption

A massive "canyon of fire" was carved into the sun's southern hemisphere due to a large magnetic filament eruption. The eruption generated a canyon approximately 6,200 miles wide and 10 times as long. Solar filaments are arcs of electrified gas held above the sun's surface, which collapse when the magnetic field becomes unstable. Scientists are awaiting data to determine if the eruption resulted in a coronal mass ejection (CME) directed towards Earth, which could trigger impressive auroras. The current aurora season has already showcased dramatic displays and is expected to intensify as we approach the solar maximum.
