Tragic Loss: Rescued Walrus Calf Receiving Round-the-Clock Cuddles Passes Away

Despite receiving round-the-clock care and cuddles from wildlife rescue workers, a 150-pound walrus pup rescued from a frozen Alaskan oil field died due to complications of malnutrition. The orphaned calf, found alone and suffering from malnutrition and dehydration, was admitted to the Alaska SeaLife Center's Wildlife Response Program. Despite the center's best efforts, the young mammal suffered nutrient malabsorption and other complications, ultimately succumbing to his condition. A necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

NASA detects multiple asteroids approaching Earth at alarming speeds.

An asteroid the size of 18 walruses is set to pass by the Earth on May 21, according to NASA's asteroid tracker. The asteroid, named 2023 JK, is estimated to be 64 meters in diameter and will pass around 1.65 million kilometers away from Earth. While humanity is at no risk of being killed by asteroids any time soon, walruses are under severe threat from climate change. The World Wildlife Fund and British Antarctic Survey have put together a five-year initiative where the public can look through thousands of satellite images to spot walruses as part of the first-ever effort to carry out a full population census for these animals.
