Unveiling Betelgeuse's Mysterious "Great Dimming" with 15 Years of Data

A team of astronomers has used 15 years of data from the STELLA robotic telescope to study the "Great Dimming" event of Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star. The data revealed five distinct layers of the star's photosphere and showed that the variations in the innermost layer were in line with the star's brightness variations. The analysis also identified two powerful shockwaves in the photosphere, which caused an outflow of material and subsequent infall across the layers. The star returned to its normal state in early 2022.

Unveiling the Mysteries Behind Betelgeuse's "Great Dimming" with 15 Years of Data

A team of astronomers has used 15 years of data from the STELLA robotic telescope to study the "Great Dimming" event of Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star. They found that the dimming was not consistent across the star's sphere, with the southern hemisphere being darker than the northern. The data revealed that two powerful shockwaves in the photosphere caused a major outflow of material, leading to the dimming. The events didn't happen simultaneously across all photospheric layers, and it took until early 2022 for Betelgeuse to settle back down.

Mysterious Remains: Unveiling the Strange Cosmic Object

Astronomers have identified a strange cosmic object, PM 1-322, as a variable planetary nebula, which is the ancient remains of a dead star. PM 1-322's light output changes over long periods of time, and it exhibits eruption-like events. Planetary nebulas are important in understanding the distribution of elements in the universe after stars die. The object may be associated with a companion star, and further observations are needed to determine its true nature.

Impending Explosion: Our Fascinating Star Draws Near.

Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star in the constellation Orion, is known for its brightness fluctuations and is inching closer to a grandiose collapse and stellar explosion, known as a supernova. While it's uncertain when this will happen, historical records suggest it might not explode for a long time. When it does explode, it will be visible to the naked eye and will be the brightest star in the sky for around 100 days. Other red supergiants in our galaxy, like Eta Carinae, might erupt before Betelgeuse.

Chinese astronomers discover new variable star.

Chinese astronomers have discovered a new variable star, V18, using the Nanshan One-meter Wide-field Telescope (NOWT) during a photometric survey of the old open cluster NGC 188. The study detected 25 variable stars, out of which one turned out to be a new detection. The newly discovered star is a periodic variable with a period of approximately 0.317 days and is most likely a W Ursae Majoris (EW) system. The data obtained by the team also allowed them to reclassify one previously known variable.
