Record-Breaking Temperatures Predicted for 2023 and 2024

Global temperatures are projected to surpass the key climate threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels as early as next year, according to the UK's Met Office. This rapid warming, which is happening faster than expected, could lead to catastrophic sea level rise and extreme heat affecting 2 billion people. Despite the urgency, world leaders at the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai are still emphasizing the 1.5C target, even though some scientists and activists believe it is no longer achievable. The focus should shift towards discussing how to bring global temperatures back below the threshold instead of preventing it altogether. Efforts to cut emissions are falling short, and the planet is on track to consistently exceed the 1.5C threshold within seven years if emission levels remain unchanged. The speed at which the planet is approaching the 1.5C mark is raising alarm, and drastic emissions cuts are needed to meet the target, which is politically challenging. The COP28 conference is increasingly recognizing the need for funding adaptation and addressing the losses and damages caused by climate change.

"New Free Greenhouse Gas Tracker Launched by Satellite Imagery Analysis Firm"

Satellite imagery analysis provider Kayrros has launched a free global methane tracking map using data from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-5P satellite and the International Space Station. The map identifies 5,645 methane super-emitters worldwide, with the majority coming from oil and gas, coal, and waste and agriculture sectors. Kayrros is calling for a ban on super-emitters, stating that reducing methane emissions would have the same impact on curbing rising temperatures as removing all cars and trucks from the road. The launch coincides with the UN Climate Change Conference, where methane reduction is a key focus.

Plastics Treaty Talks: Chaos, Stalling, and Unproven Recycling Methods

The fossil fuel industry is promoting unproven recycling methods as a solution to plastic pollution in order to protect their profits and undermine efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels. At the recent Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee meeting in Nairobi, negotiations on an international agreement to address plastics ended in deadlock as countries like Saudi Arabia and China, along with fossil fuel and petrochemical lobbyists, opposed any limits on plastic production. These groups advocate for a "circular economy" where waste plastic is endlessly recycled, but critics argue that this approach is insufficient and that reduction measures are necessary. The industry's push for chemical recycling and "circularity" is seen as a way to avoid production caps and perpetuate the plastic crisis.
