Astronomers Investigate VCC 615's Globular Clusters

Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have studied the globular cluster system of the ultra-diffuse galaxy VCC 615, located in the Virgo Cluster. The study identified 22 globular cluster candidates and estimated the total globular cluster population to be 25.1, indicating a high specific frequency compared to similar dwarf galaxies. The findings suggest a large mass-to-light ratio for VCC 615, with a total mass between 90 and 160 billion solar masses. The galaxy's compact nucleus may eventually form a new ultracompact dwarf galaxy.

Uncovering the Mysteries of UGC 9050-Dw1: An Ultra-Diffuse Galaxy

Astronomers have used the Hubble Space Telescope and Jansky Very Large Array to study the ultra-diffuse galaxy UGC 9050-Dw1, which displays an unusual morphology indicative of an interaction and recent star formation activity. The observations revealed that UGC 9050-Dw1 exhibits an ultraviolet-bright elongated central core with associated gas of neutral atomic hydrogen and an extended stellar tidal plume to the north. The obtained data suggest that UGC 9050-Dw1 formed as a result of a rare merging event of two dwarf galaxies.

Ultra-diffuse local galaxies abound, say researchers.

Using cosmological simulations, an international team predicts that there may be up to 12 ultra-diffuse galaxies in the Local Group, a small cluster that currently contains approximately 60 known galaxies, including the Milky Way and Andromeda. Ultra-diffuse galaxies are faint and difficult to observe, but understanding their total number in the Local Group is crucial to our understanding of the cosmos. The discovery of these new galaxies could have far-reaching implications for our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution.
