The Oglala Sioux Tribe has banished South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem from their land in response to her consideration of sending resources to the US-Mexico border. The tribe's president criticized Noem for dehumanizing migrants and accused her of using the issue for political gain. Noem defended her stance, citing the impact of drugs and human trafficking on tribal reservations and expressing willingness to work with Native American tribes. The tribal president emphasized the tribe's sovereignty and ongoing need for federal law enforcement support, while Noem's actions align with other Republican governors' support for Texas Governor Greg Abbott in his dispute with the Biden administration.
President Biden will designate the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument in Southern Nevada, which will be one of the largest tracts of land to come under federal protection during his presidency. The monument will preserve Nevada's Spirit Mountain and the surrounding desert, which is a sacred site for more than 10 tribal nations. The designation will also protect the Castner Range National Monument in Fort Bliss, West Texas. The two monuments will protect close to 514,000 acres of new public lands. Biden will make the announcement at a conservation summit for tribal leaders and elected officials.
Two BNSF trains derailed in Arizona and Washington state, with the latter spilling diesel fuel on tribal land along Puget Sound. No injuries were reported. The derailment in Arizona involved a train carrying corn syrup, while the one in Washington occurred on a berm along Padilla Bay, on the Swinomish tribal reservation near Anacortes. Most of the spilled diesel fuel leaked on the land side of the berm rather than toward the water, and there were no indications the spill reached the water or affected any wildlife.
