A severe winter storm named Elli has caused significant disruptions across northern Germany, halting long-distance train services, canceling Bundesliga matches, and causing road blockages due to heavy snowfall and snowdrifts, with ongoing efforts to restore normalcy.
Two of Germany's biggest transport unions have called for a nationwide strike, which is set to be the biggest in 30 years. The strike will affect airports and train stations across the country, with Frankfurt Airport cancelling all flights on Monday and Munich Airport cancelling all passenger flights on Sunday and Monday. German rail operator Deutsche Bahn has announced that no long-distance trains will run on Monday, with numerous trains also being cancelled on Tuesday. The unions are seeking pay raises of 10.5% and 12%, respectively, while employers have offered a total of 5% in two stages plus one-time payments of €2,500.
