A new species of scorpionfish, named Neomerinthe ornithoptera, has been discovered in the tropical waters of Fiji and the Wallis and Futuna Islands in the southwest Pacific. This unique fish has longer pectoral-fin rays resembling a bird wing, and lacks certain spines typically found in scorpionfish. The bird wing scorpionfish, unlike its venomous relatives, inhabits deeper waters and is found near a few islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The fish are distinguished by their fiery color, unique spines, scales, and teeth. They have tentacles covering their bodies, with dense areas near their heads and associated with their spines. The bright orange to reddish white fish have black blotches on their bodies, a steep snout, compressed body, and a large mouth filled with short, pointy teeth. The new species ranges in length from about 1.5 inches to 3.5 inches.
