Researchers have discovered a new species of scorpionfish, named Neomerinthe ignea or Pacific-flame Scorpionfish, during a survey in the western Pacific Ocean near Japan and the Philippines. The fish are distinguished by their fiery color, unique spines, scales, and teeth. They have tentacles covering their bodies, with dense areas near their heads and associated with their spines. The bright orange to reddish white fish have black blotches on their bodies, a steep snout, compressed body, and a large mouth filled with short, pointy teeth. The new species ranges in length from about 1.5 inches to 3.5 inches.
