Mohammed Al Bashir has been tasked by a Syrian rebel group to form a transitional government following the toppling of President Bashar Al-Assad, aiming to manage the transition period and prevent chaos.
Rwanda rejects U.S. calls to withdraw troops and missile systems from eastern Congo, citing defense of Rwandan territory against a "dramatic military build-up" by Congo near the border. The U.S. accuses Rwanda of backing the rebel group M23, while Rwanda points to the threat posed by the FDLR, an armed group integrated into the Congolese army. The situation has raised concerns about the U.S.'s credibility as a mediator in Africa's Great Lakes region.
New Zealand pilot Philip Mehrtens, kidnapped by the West Papua Liberation Army in February 2023, appeared gaunt and disheveled in a proof-of-life video released by his captors. The rebel group has threatened to execute him unless West Papua is granted independence from Indonesia. In the video, Mehrtens reassured his family that he was being treated well and expressed his love for them. The 38-year-old pilot also appealed to the New Zealand government for inhalers and an e-book reader. West Papua has been the center of an independence movement, with separatist fighters launching attacks in recent years.

The EMC-Farc is a splinter group of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) and is made up of left-wing rebels who refused to lay down their arms when the Farc leadership signed a peace deal in 2016. Indigenous groups have borne the brunt of Colombia's armed conflict, with many of their children abducted or lured away to fight for armed groups.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that his government will begin negotiations with the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in Tanzania this week, marking the first time the Ethiopian government has formally said it would negotiate with the rebel group. The OLA is an outlawed splinter group of the Oromo Liberation Front, and its grievances are rooted in alleged marginalisation of the Oromo people and neglect by the federal government. The OLA and the federal government blame each other for a number of attacks in Ethiopia’s Oromiya region, the country’s most populous.
