Mushroom Extract: A New Ally in Prostate Cancer Fight

Researchers at the City of Hope have found that white button mushroom extract may slow or prevent prostate cancer growth by reducing myeloid-derived suppressor cells, which suppress the immune response. Early trials in mice and humans show promising results, suggesting the extract could enhance anti-cancer immune defenses when used alongside traditional treatments. While the exact mechanism is unknown, the study supports the potential of 'food as medicine' in cancer care. The findings were published in Clinical and Translational Medicine.

New Supplement Found to Trigger Self-Destruction in Prostate Cancer Cells

Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory have discovered that menadione, a vitamin K precursor, can slow prostate cancer progression in mice by disrupting cancer cells' recycling processes, causing them to burst. This finding offers potential new treatment avenues for resistant prostate cancer and myotubular myopathy, a rare muscle condition in infants. The study suggests that menadione's pro-oxidant properties could be effective where antioxidant treatments have failed, providing hope for improved quality of life and extended survival.

WhatsApp Initiative Targets Prostate Cancer in Black Men

Researchers in Cardiff are exploring the use of WhatsApp group chats to raise awareness and encourage prostate cancer testing among black men, who face a higher risk of the disease. The initiative, led by Dr. Sarah Fry and supported by Cancer Research UK, aims to leverage community-led communication to overcome barriers in traditional healthcare messaging. The project hopes to improve early detection rates by using familiar and relatable communication methods, potentially leading to a broader national screening program if successful.

Mushroom Supplement Found to Slow Prostate Cancer Progression

Researchers at City of Hope have found that white button mushroom supplements may slow the progression of prostate cancer by reducing cancer-promoting immune cells, according to early clinical trial results. The study, part of a phase 2 clinical trial, suggests that these mushrooms can decrease myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and increase cancer-fighting T cells, potentially transforming 'cold' tumors into 'hot' ones. While promising, further research is needed, and experts advise against self-prescribing supplements without professional guidance.

"Understanding Prostate Cancer: A Guide for Men"

Prostate cancer is the second-leading cancer among men, with a rise in diagnoses expected. Screening methods include rectal exams and PSA testing, but discomfort and lack of health literacy can be barriers. Risk factors include older age, family history, and race, with Black men at higher risk. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, and hormonal therapy, but early detection can lead to challenges in deciding whether to treat or monitor the cancer. Older and younger patients face dilemmas regarding treatment side effects versus the risk of tumor spread, with active surveillance being an option for some.

"Understanding Prostate Cancer: Signs, Tests, and Misconceptions"

About 1 in 8 men may be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and it's important to be aware of warning signs such as urgency of urination, nocturia, decreased flow, and incomplete bladder evacuation. Additional symptoms include blood in urine or semen, hip/back/chest pain, erectile dysfunction, constipation, fatigue, weight loss, and decreased appetite. Men over 65 and those with a family history of cancer are at higher risk. Early detection through tests like DRC, blood PSA levels, MRI, and biopsy is crucial, as it significantly improves survival rates.

"Family Funeral Reveals Personal Health Risks"

Ian Duncan attended his mother's funeral and discovered a family history of prostate cancer, leading him to get tested. Initially, his PSA levels were low, but a subsequent test revealed an increase, and at 67, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After a series of examinations and treatments, including hormone therapy and radiotherapy, his latest PSA test results were low, indicating the treatment's effectiveness. Ian's story highlights the importance of being aware of one's health risks and the need for regular check-ups, especially for those with a family history of diseases like prostate cancer.

Genetic Prostate Cancer Risks Higher for Black Men, Study Finds.

A recent study covering tens of thousands of men of African descent offers one answer to the disparities in prostate cancer outcomes — increased genetic risk, including some risk factors found only in men of African ancestry. The study is the largest to look at genetic risk factors in men of African descent and discovered nine new genetic variants associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer for men with African ancestry. Eventually, scientists hope to develop a genetic screening test to help men determine their risk for prostate cancer.
