John Brotherton, a well-known pitmaster and owner of Brotherton’s Black Iron Barbecue, passed away at the age of 49 after suffering a medical event. Known for his exceptional brisket and community-minded spirit, he was remembered by friends and colleagues for his generosity and passion for barbecue. His restaurant will continue under the guidance of his team, including sausage master Bill Dumas, pitmaster Bobby Holley, and general manager Julia Daycock, whom Brotherton made part owners in December. He is survived by his wife, Brenda, and son, Braeden.
LeAnn Mueller, founder of La Barbecue and a trailblazer in the Texas barbecue scene, has passed away at the age of 51. Mueller, who was the granddaughter of barbecue legend Louie Mueller, opened La Barbecue in 2012 and quickly made it one of Central Texas' top purveyors of smoked meat. She was known for her exceptional beef ribs, brisket, and sausage, and for breaking stereotypes as a married lesbian in the old boys club of barbecue. Mueller is survived by her wife, Ali Clem, their dogs, and her nephew. Funeral arrangements are pending.
