Scientists have discovered a new deep-sea enzyme, PET46, that can continuously degrade polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic, commonly used in plastic bottles. PET46 can break down both long-chain and short-chain PET molecules, making it a promising candidate for biotechnological applications in plastic waste management.
