Bacteria Turn Trash Plastic into Parkinson’s Medication

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh engineered E. coli to break down post-consumer PET plastic into L-DOPA, the frontline drug for Parkinson’s disease, marking the first demonstration of a biology-based route from plastic waste to a pharmaceutical and signaling a potentially greener, scalable way to produce medicines. The work, part of the Carbon-Loop Sustainable Biomanufacturing Hub with £14 million in EPSRC funding, aims to optimize industrial-scale production and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel–based pharmaceutical processes.

"Revolutionary Enzyme Unveiled: A Game-Changer for PET Plastic Recycling"

Scientists have discovered a new deep-sea enzyme, PET46, that can continuously degrade polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic, commonly used in plastic bottles. The enzyme, found in archaea microorganisms, has unique properties and differs structurally from previously known PET-degrading enzymes. PET46 can break down both long-chain and short-chain PET molecules, making it a promising candidate for biotechnological applications in plastic waste management. The discovery expands our understanding of PET-degrading enzymes and their ecological role in the ocean.
