New Dinosaur Species Unearthed in China

A new species of oviraptorosaur, named Yuanyanglong bainian, has been discovered in Inner Mongolia, China, dating back to the Early Cretaceous period, around 110 million years ago. This species, identified from two specimens, exhibits unique morphological features distinguishing it from other known oviraptorosaurs. The discovery provides new insights into the diversity and ecology of early-diverging oviraptorosaurs, suggesting potential wading behavior and a gastric mill function similar to Caudipteryx. The findings were published in Cretaceous Research.

Remarkable Discovery: Intact Dinosaur Embryo Unearthed in Fossilized Egg

A perfectly preserved dinosaur embryo belonging to the oviraptorosaur group has been discovered inside a fossilized egg in a Chinese museum. Estimated to be between 66 and 72 million years old, the embryo is one of the most complete ever found and reveals a link between dinosaurs and modern birds. The unhatched creature displayed a posture typical of present-day bird embryos, suggesting that the behavior of tucking during hatching may have originated in ancient theropod dinosaurs. While more fossils are needed for confirmation, this exceptional find provides evidence that certain developmental behaviors in birds may have deeper roots in the theropod lineage.
