Unveiling the Enigma: New Ornithopod Discovery Solves Dinosaur Track Mystery

Researchers in Spain have identified a new ornithopod dinosaur species called Oblitosaurus bunnueli based on fossil remains from the Upper Jurassic period. This discovery sheds light on the evolutionary history of basal ankylopollexians, a diverse group of ornithopods. The size estimates of Oblitosaurus bunnueli suggest it is the largest ornithopod described in the Upper Jurassic of Europe and may solve the mystery of unidentified large dinosaur tracks found in Spain and Portugal. The fossils, including a tooth, digit, and hindlimb, were found in the Villar del Arzobispo Formation and are currently housed in the Museo Aragonés de Paleontología in Teruel, Spain. The dinosaur was named after Spanish film director Luis Buñuel, reflecting the uniqueness and importance of the discovery.

Giant Prehistoric Dinosaur Unearthed in Spain

Paleontologists in Spain have discovered a new dinosaur species, Oblitosaurus bunnueli, which is the largest ornithopod from the Jurassic Period in Europe. The fossils were found in Teruel province and date back around 150 million years. The dinosaur could have reached a length of around 23 feet, making it exceptionally large for its time. The discovery sheds light on the evolutionary history and diversity of ornithopods during the Jurassic. The new species is named in honor of filmmaker Luis Buñuel, and the fossils were previously overlooked at the excavation site.
