"Unprecedented Oil Spill Threatens Gulf of Mexico and Surrounding States"
Up to 4.1 million litres of oil may have leaked into the Gulf of Mexico from a pipeline system off Louisiana's southeast coast. The exact location and cause of the leak are still being determined, but none of the oil has reached land so far. The impact on wildlife is being investigated, with two oily pelicans sighted but still able to fly. The oil discharge was discovered amid high winds, which helped some of the oil evaporate and disperse, but patches are still visible. This spill is smaller than the 2010 BP oil disaster, but environmental groups are concerned about the impact on Gulf animals.
